With a song titled ‘Champion’ you’re always gonna have a good chance to be sync’ed on a commercial, I wreckon a boxer will now use this as their stage entrance tune!

This put tingles down my spine.. Not sure if this is a teaser to a full length documentary but it left me wanting more. Def worth a watch!

First airing on BBC3 on Wednesday 5th January 2011, this BBC documentary titled ‘Music, Money and Hip Hop Honeys’ has managed to stir up a lot of people in the UK ‘urban’ space. Here is the synopsis:

Nel Hedayat investigates the controversial world of music videos and meets the girls who dream of dancing in them. Nel spends time with girls who are on the path to success, but also learns about the dark side of an industry where dancers chasing fame can leave themselves open to financial and sexual exploitation.

For a ‘Factual’ documentary this program was fairly misleading and appeared to lack any of the above stated ‘investigation’. The presenter Nel Hedayat was patronising throughout the piece and it was like the journey of this documentary had already been written before a camera was even picked up! “Hey look at that girl in the video with her ass out, I bet they’re all like that and think they’re going to be superstars, lets make that our focus!”

Presenter Nel suggests that Hip Hop started out in the early 90s and that the video for Sisqo’s ‘Thong Song’ was the catalyst for a wave of Hip Hop music videos that objectified women. There is no mention of 2 Live Crew or Too $hort, this documentary created a new reality.

When focusing on the rising UK urban scene, they failed to mention any of the top artists or directors, it was more about Channel AKA and ‘hood videos’. However, it gives the general viewing public the impression that this is the BEST.

While artist XO Man put across some decent comments, director Digital Dan managed to insult everyone he’s ever worked with by basically saying that he often tricks girls into working for free. While he claims on his Twitter that BBC edited him to look bad, as much as I wish this was true, it’s hard to believe that was the case.

Ironically however, the biggest problem with this documentary for me was the amount of people on Twitter who said they were asked to be interviewed and refused when they realised that BBC were trying to portray our scene in a negative light. This doc was only able to do this because the good people didn’t take part and stand up to this nonsense. Your voice was silent.

The Urban and Hip Hop industry in UK aren’t perfect, there are probably more cowboys then genuine bonifide people but it’s still very early stages. In years to come the cream will rise and the cowboys will get frustrated and end up on the streets telling stories of how they use to run the scene!
